Quick answer

Clean your Aeropress after every use with warm water and mild soap, and deep-clean the rubber seal and filter cap weekly to prevent coffee oil buildup and keep your brew tasting fresh.

Why regular maintenance matters

Coffee oils and fine grounds can accumulate inside the chamber and on the rubber seal over time. This residue can make your coffee taste bitter or stale, and it can also cause the plunger to stick or wear out faster. A quick daily rinse and a weekly deeper clean will extend the life of your Aeropress and keep every cup consistent.

Step-by-step cleaning and maintenance routine

  1. Rinse immediately after brewing: After pressing, remove the filter cap and eject the coffee puck into the trash. Rinse the chamber, plunger, and filter cap under warm running water. Use your thumb or a soft brush to dislodge any grounds stuck to the rubber seal. Don't let coffee residue dry inside the chamber—dried oils are harder to remove and can stain the plastic.
  2. Deep-clean the rubber seal weekly: Remove the rubber seal from the plunger by gently peeling it off. Wash the seal separately with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly and dry before reattaching. This prevents oil buildup that can cause the plunger to slip or leak. Never use abrasive scrubbers or bleach on the seal—they can damage the rubber and shorten its lifespan.
  3. Descale the chamber monthly: If you notice white mineral deposits inside the chamber, soak it in a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts warm water for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water. This removes limescale without harming Tritan™ or borosilicate glass. Skip descaling if you use filtered water—you may only need to do it every 2-3 months.
  4. Replace the rubber seal and filters as needed: The rubber seal typically lasts 6-12 months with regular use. If the plunger becomes hard to push or leaks air, order a replacement seal. Change paper filters with every brew—reusing them clogs the holes and slows extraction. Store spare filters in a dry place to keep them from absorbing odors or moisture.

Product facts

  • Aeropress CLEAR: The Aeropress CLEAR is made from shatterproof Tritan™ and includes a main chamber, plunger with rubber seal, stirring paddle, measuring scoop, filter cap, and 50 paper filters. Tritan™ is durable for travel and daily use, but the rubber seal still needs regular cleaning to maintain a tight seal and smooth plunging action.
